Wecome to the Gingin Observatory

At Gingin Observatory visitors experience the wonders of space by viewing through telescopes, engaging with astronomers and by interacting during a big screen presentation that highlights our Universe.

The building is split into two areas. The space observatory (with a fully retractable roof) houses 5 large telescopes, including the largest in Australia for public access, and several pairs of high magnification binoculars. The other half of the building is a theatre room that also contains a reception, exhibition space, shop.
One hour away from bright city lights means dark night skies for wondrous views of stars, planets, galaxies and more. It’s fun for the whole family.

Ever gazed into the night sky and wanted to know more about the mysteries that lurk within the darkness? At the Gingin Observatory , just a glance through a powerful telescopes and some words of wisdom from the night sky enthusiasts can unlock at least some of the secrets of the universe.

Our telescopes take you hurling back in time revealing space as it was hundredes of years ago. If you're viewing a star thats 5'000 light years away, your actually seeing the light of that star as it was 5'000years ago- that's how long it takes the light to reach Earth!

This is just one of the facinating facts you'll walk away with thanks to our Astronomers are on hand to reveal what you're seeing though the telecopes, you will learn at a glance about "galactic cannibalism", Apparently big galaxies are rather partial to smaller ones and are prone to gobble them up!. And of course there are the planets you can see like Saturn or Mars on specific times of the year, and of course It's enough to make your mind boggle. So come along and join us for an entertaining evening and see some of the great wonders of our most beautiful and brilliant Universe!

History of the AIGO site:

October 1999 Australian International Gravitational Observatory (AIGO) construction completed.
October 1999 AIGO officially opened.
30 October 2001 Gingin Observatory officially opened.
10 November 2003 Gravity Discovery Centre officially opened
June 2006 Zadko Telescope Dome completed
